Georgetown Heritage
Georgetown Heritage is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working to revitalize, activate, and interpret the National Park Service assets in Georgetown into inviting, inclusive, and inspiring destinations, with an initial focus on the C&O Canal National Historical Park.
Their first priority is to restore and revitalize the mile-long section of the C&O Canal that runs through Georgetown. It is a unique and beloved piece of Georgetown’s – and America’s – history. It is a gateway into the story of our industrial past, and a place for exercise, recreation, and reflection. In recent years budget cuts have forced the National Park Service to eliminate all educational programming and defer important maintenance work in Georgetown.
As an official Friends Group of the National Park Service, Georgetown Heritage is organizing the community to raise both public and private resources to restore, enliven, and interpret the Georgetown section of the C&O Canal. The first step in this process is to develop a comprehensive master plan to guide their efforts.
